Book Review: Pulse

Rowan Platts is addicted to success.
When she’s presented with the chance to work on a top secret project fronted by her idol, renowned virologist Dr. Margot Miller, Rowan signs her life away without second thought. The realization she’s gotten in over her head comes only after the subject of their study is revealed: a boy with a bad attitude and an uninhibited taste for human blood.
He’s a medical anomaly. Having the ability to crush metal with his bare hands and hear a heartbeat from across the room, it would make Rowan’s career if she was the one to discover what made him so unusual.
Easier said than done, with a subject who prefers snapping necks over answering questions.

This book is hard to review, or to compare to other things I’ve read, because I never really read books like this one. It ties the line of what freaks me out and won’t let me sleep at night and what fascinates me.

I generally don’t read vampire stories, especially ones with paranormal romance, but this fame highly recommended so I absolutely had to give it a try.
The first thing I really loved about this story was the amazing platonic friendship between Cameron and Rowan. I was so sure he was in love with her, because that’s usually how platonic friendships work out in YA, but I was SO glad he wasn’t. Honestly YA needs more platonic friendship rep so it was perfect,
I also really appreciated the slow burn romance, because a lot of paranormal romances are cheap and don’t want to take the time to actually develop the feelings, and instead there’s infatuation and love at first sight, and it’s ridiculous.
There was a little bit of infatuation coming from Rowan towards Lyall, but it wasn’t over the top, in fact it was more like she cared about him as a person and had human decency.
As with most stories like this, there was a bit of grappling with morals and the place it fell seemed like a grey area, and the morality wasn’t something heavily featured, so to speak? It was a part of the story, definitely, but not an enormous part.
The writing in this, to change the subject rather suddenly because that’s how my brain works, was decadent. I fell in legitimate LOVE with this writing. It was beautiful and haunting, and inspiring and wonderful and I’m running out of adjectives to describe it. It was definitely one of my favorite part of the book.
Also, I’m pretty sure this book is self published, (correct me if I’m wrong! ❤️) but honestly you couldn’t tell. For one, the cover is absolutely STUNNING, and the book is really well edited. Like I found one spelling error and that’s it, which usually isn’t my tale with self published stories. Like even traditionally published books have a few errors so that’s like A+ to whoever edited this.
To wrap up, because I need a wrap up at the end of these reviews because my brain goes all over the place, this book is an enticing and bloody(yes I added this word for the pun) good(hit me it’s okay) late night read, perfect for fans of iZombie and Stranger Things.
